The history of the swimming pool

The first swimming pool dates back to the 3rd millennium BC. It was constructed at the site of Mohenjo-Daro, and was more-than-likely dugout. Swimming as an organized activity goes back as far as 2500 B.C. in ancient Egypt and later in ancient Greece, Rome, and Assyria.

Swimming pools, however, did not reach popularity until the middle of the 19th century. My how times have changed!

Water cleanliness and disinfection

Swimming pool water must be maintained with very low levels of bacteria and viruses to protect pool users against disease. Maintaining a safe concentration of disinfectant is critically important in assuring the safety and health of pool users. It is very important to keep the pH of the pool in the range 7.2 to 7.6; higher pH drastically reduces the sanitizing power of the chlorine due to reduced ORP, while lower pH causes discomfort to swimmers, especially to eyes. Improper pool sanitation, such as a too high level of chlorine or too low pH, can sometimes unintentionally irritate swimmers. Remember that any sanitizer is harsh if overused.

The chemical balance of the water must be carefully monitored, ensuring the absence of algae or bacteria in the water.

Generally, a well maintained pool will have no smell (or taste for that matter), and will have crystal clear water.

The proper management of a swimming pool can be a difficult and time-consuming task, and the cost of hiring someone to do so for you can put a hurt on your pocketbook. At the same time, with the right products and know-how, maintaining a swimming pool can be a relatively easy and pleasant process.
